Hi there
My daughter is failing math and I was wondering what steps I could take to help her pass?
Thank you -
I think my sixth grader is having some issues in math because she has been behind for some time. Essentially, I feel she needs to go back and re-learn some of the previous lessons from grade 5 or even 4 so that she can actually "get" the grade 6 level stuff. I know this is what is going with her math but the teacher has given me basically a blank report card not addressing this. How can I go about catching her up

We moved provinces this year (Ontario to BC). My oldest was in middle school in Toronto, and is in high school here in BC - 10th grade. I've seen a big dip in her marks with the move and this has me wondering about the level of difficulty province-to-province. She's a dedicated student but has moved from A to B/C+ level. Also noticed that the teacher is telling us that she is can "improve" in areas we know her to be strong in (writing, literacy).

How come some areas of the Lower Mainland have middle schools while some do not?
-
I'm wondering about the benefit of private schools versus public schools, and how this might help my kids. I have both of them in public school right now, and while one is doing OK, the other is struggling. I like the idea of smaller class sizes, too. From the "experts" perspective, is it worth the investment? Thank you.

Is summer school a good idea for kids? I wanted to do summer school this year but didn't. Does it reinforce or does it put them ahead?
-
Hi there, just wondering about any educational or homework apps that might be good for a grade 6 kid out there.
-
How come home ec isn't considered a core class anymore? It's important and teaches life skills, but seems like it's being pushed off to the side year by year. Not sure if u can answer that, just wondering.

Considering we live in an age of consistent technological advancement; how will technology be incorporated into education or will there be a move away from technology in order to preserve traditional learning techniques? (ex. tablets vs. books, school provided laptops in the classrooms?)
-
Will schools eventually be making the move to providing digital report cards instead of paper report cards?
-
How do I know that my child's report card is really accurate? Especially in a high school with thousands of kids? I don't trust this system, and I have doubts about the report card my son got last week. #help

My son is in a grade 4/5 split class and I don't think that it's working. I think this is true for many kids and I want to investigate this issue further. Is there studies on this? I'm also considering taking my son out of this class but I'm not sure how I can request this. Do I ask the principal? Switch schools?

hey,
just wanting to know more about teaching kids to read if they are behind? what can I do? -
Good evening, CTV Vancouver! My daughter is currently attending Jamieson Elementary. She's in Grade 7 there, around 60 kids in the grade I think. There's a large number of ESL kids in the school, and her grade. I think this is detrimental to kids who's first language is actually english. How come the ESL kids are mixed in with the other students? Is there a benefit to this? Seems like it's putting everyone else behind....and I can't imagine they are doing well on report cards...

My child was sick for 3 weeks and this was noted on the report card as affecting her performance. I worked with the teacher while she was sick to get the homework and keep up. I was told this sufficient at the time but now I feel blindsided. I want to confront the teacher about it as I do not think this is fair. For example, she received 0 on a social studies presentation that she could not make.

Thank you to everyone who submitted their questions this morning. If you missed the opportunity to submit your inquiries, our team will be back tonight from 5 - 7 p.m.

A common question Sylvan Learning receives from parents:What math courses does my child need in high school to be able to attend university? (Does it matter if my son is in A&W math?)A: High school students need to take either Pre-Calculus math courses or Foundation math courses in high school for university entrance. If they are taking Apprenticeship & Workplace math courses, they will need to upgrade their math skills at a community college or university before being granted acceptance into a university program. Check the BC curriculum website at http://www.gov.bc.ca/bced/ for more details. -
for students applying to US schools, it has come to my attn that grade 11 marks count. we were not told his before. just wondering how to make sure my child is at the right level for admission. should we get a coach?

My daughter is a Grade 12 student at John Oliver Secondary and applying to universities and colleges in Canada, the US and Europe. We are struggling to find information on 1. proper deadlines (they seem different for international students), 2. how to apply for loans or scholarships - what are the eligibility requirements for each school??? 3. what school are the best for specific programs. Our school councillor is lacking the knowledge to be able to guide in this area, and I'm not sure where I can go for support. I am willing to hire someone at this point. I am also wondering if there's a website somewhere with all of this info I can use as a starting point. I'm wondering if you can provide information on where I can go for either.

Hi there,
I am one of the parents to grade 9 students at PMSS. I do not know if I can comment on my son actual report card. First of all, I want to ask why among all this technology there is no teacher portal on the Port Moody Secondary school where parents can navigate the test and assignments due dates instead of reling on teachers emails once a month only or none?!
Also, I know report card is important way to communicate with parents about there children progress , however, very negative comments and only negative comments in the report card is not the best way to inform parents about their child problem and this report card will affect child badly if he want to register in another school and make parents blam the child in very negative way which might make him hate the school and that specific subject?
I am facing a problem now that my child starting hate two subjects because of the very bad comments of his teachers, however, he feels and know he need to work harder and felts he was guilty by not finishing his homework on time, however, no encouraging comments were mentioned as a try to change the student behavior.
Third, I hope Sylvan can have a better way and more effective way of communicating with their students' teachers and school to ensure a better edcuation and higher success rate.
Thank you for taking the time to read my questions and concerns.
Kindest Regards,

Here's a BIG problem, CTV! My daughter missed the early admission for UBC. I can't remember the exact % she needed to get in, but anyway: we're a semester in. Can she still get in? Or is it too late now that the first 3 months are done? She doesn't want to go anywhere else. If she doesn't get in, what are the options?

Dear CTV,
What a wonderful idea for a chat!! Thank you for the opportunity. It seems like more and more parents are wanting to tear their hair out.
I am very concerned about my youngest son and his schooling. He’s enrolled at a public school in Delta, BC and began Grade 9 in September. Javen does well on his assignments and projects but the #1 area of concern is exams. He seems to be very nervous going into tests, and no matter how much we study, he walks away with low marks. I’m starting to think that his nerves are getting in the way of him doing well. How can I help him through the anxiety? Do I bring this up to his teacher as a reason why I think he’s not doing well on tests? Winter exams are creeping up and I’m concerned about his confidence going into them.
I check back here tomorrow for an answeR?
Thanks so much,
Hardeep -

What is the common core? I've been hearing a lot about this recently and was wondering if Canada was going to implement this into their educational systems.

A common question Sylvan receives from parents:
My child doesn’t do well on tests. Is it text anxiety or is it a skill issue?
A: Lack of skills, confidence, poor understanding of content or low comprehension can all contribute to poor test scores and the anxiety they bring. You need to determine if it is happening in all test situations or in a specific subject area. If it is isolated to a specific subject, you may want to consult your child’s teacher to determine if he is understanding the content taught in class. If it is happening across all subjects, the key is preparation! The more prepared your child feels, the less anxious he will be. -
How do I encourage my child to enjoy school? I'm unsure if he is not enjoying school due to his teacher, the level of difficulty or if there is a larger issue at play. I simply need advice to MOTIVATE him!!

Hi Sylvan. My name is Rachel. I have 3 kids aged 6, 8 and 13. I want to take my kids on vacation on Spring Break but as they are at different schools, their break times do not match up. Is it that detrimental if my kids miss a week of school? The teachers I've talked to aren't that happy with my decision to take them out of their schedule but there is no other way to make this happen. In your experience, can this be a really bad idea?

My twins have just started Kindergarten (WEE!), and my daughter is very nervous in a classroom setting. She has been refusing to do show and tell and other group activities. How can I work with her to overcome this fear?! (and if you can get my other one to shut up, AWESOME!)

I AM HAVING TROUBLE TO HELP WITH HOMEWORK AS RUSSIAN IS MY FIRST LANGUAGE. WE MOVED HERE THREE YEARS AGO. I AM WONDERING ABOUT A TUTOR FOR MY CHILDREN. CAN YOU RECOMMEND?

How can I prepare my daughter for her provincial exams?
-
My son just received an "F" in mathematics from his school but here's the thing: he has 59%, which is a pass in the province. He's at a private school that says they consider 60% a pass. Can they legally give him an F if he's passing according to the province?

Hi,
My daughter is in high school right now and is really struggling in french. This is not a new concern but I haven't put much effort into it as I don't think the subject is very important. I am getting concerned now that it's pulling her GPA down. She has A- and B+ across the board on the report I just got but the C in French made her miss honour roll last week.
Should I be putting more resources into this? IMO, it should be an optional class.
Thanks,
Maria
